Here is a nice windscreeen and cooking stand for a gas stove, patented in 1922 by the Nystrom, and assigned to the Optimus company of Sweden. This is not too different from the Svea Optimus stoves offered by Brunton Stoves, with the Optimus 123 shown below. More on the history of Svea Optimus is here.
The flame was below the apparatus shown in the patent on both the gas version shown & the stove top version manufactured. The apparatus was designed to get the most out of one stove with shelves for various pots or trays & could also be used as an oven - the patent was for 'apparatus for baking, roasting, cooking & the like'. These were for domestic use where wind was not an issue & many times larger than the windshield on a Svea123.
